Education

KCP provides accurate, up-to-date cancer information for the public in easy-to-read language, as well as a variety of continuing education, training programs, and reference materials for health care professionals. KCP educates Kentuckians on cancer topics in the following ways:

FOR THE PUBLIC
BROCHURES/FACT SHEETS
We have developed and distribute a popular series of easy-to read fact sheets and brochures on the six cancers most prevalent in Kentucky (breast, cervix, lung, prostate, skin and colon). Download our fact sheets now. KCP also provides free educational materials from the National Cancer Institute, Centers for Disease Control, American Cancer Society, and other national cancer organizatons.

PRESENTATIONS
We provide presentations to organizations and groups, as well as one-on-one education to individuals, on specific cancers and general cancer topics, including prevention, risk reduction, screening and early detection, and survivorship. The presentations can be tailored to specific audiences, such as cancer patients and their families, schools, churches, businesses, and others.

EXHIBITS/DISPLAYS
KCP provides colorful, three-dimensional, and/or interactive displays on cancer-related topics at health fairs, community festivals, and other events. Examples include:
Faces of Colon Cancer, an exhibit featuring photographs and stories of nine Kentucky colon cancer survivors.

The dermascan machine, which people can use to see the sun damage on their skin.

Tabletop displays that include models of cancers of the lung, breast, cervix and mouth.

SPECIAL CAMPAIGNS
KCP also educates the public through special campaigns tied to a specific cancer issue or a national cancer observance. These campaigns often include toolkits containing flyers, posters, newsletter articles, sample press releases, PSAs, and tips on how to work with the mass media. Campaign examples include
:

Targeted Colon Cancer Outreach Program is an ongoing campaign that is raising awareness of colon cancer screening. The campaign is being conducted in partnership with district cancer councils across the state.

KCP coordinates Dress in Blue Day activities across the state as part of the national Dress In Blue Day campaign, held each March (Colon Cancer Awareness Month). The campaign's goal is to draw attention to the importance of colon cancer screening.

KCP collaborated with the Cancer Advocates of Big Sandy on a tobacco cessation campaign that included distribution of posters and bookmarks in the district. The materials said that smoking is an addiction, not simply a habit, and referred people to local health departments and the state's tobacco quitline (1-800-QUIT NOW) for cessation assistance.
